HeyGen vs Synthesia: which is better?
HeyGen is better for creators, marketers, and anyone who wants realistic avatars of themselves at a lower cost per minute. Synthesia is better for companies making training and internal videos at scale, where compliance, team workflows, and a polished corporate look matter more than expressiveness. Both start at $29 a month, but HeyGen gives you far more video minutes for that money, while Synthesia gives you stronger enterprise controls. If you're a solo creator or small marketing team, pick HeyGen. If you're an L&D or HR team inside a larger company, pick Synthesia.
At CompareBestAI, we put the same 60-second script through both tools and compared avatar realism, lip sync, languages, editing, custom avatars, and the real cost per finished minute.
What's the main difference between HeyGen and Synthesia?
HeyGen is built for speed, realism, and creators, with 175+ languages and cheaper minutes. Synthesia is built for enterprise training, with SOC 2 Type II compliance, team collaboration, and a slide-style editor used by a large share of Fortune 100 companies.

Avatar realism: which looks more human?
This is where HeyGen pulls ahead for most viewers. Its newer premium avatar models show more natural micro-expressions, head movement, and hand gestures. In a talking-to-camera clip, HeyGen's presenter reads closer to a real person filmed on a phone.
Synthesia's avatars are cleaner and more controlled. They look like a professional presenter in a corporate video: steady, polished, and consistent from scene to scene. That consistency is exactly what training teams want, even if it feels slightly less lively.
- Pick HeyGen if your videos need to feel personal and human, like sales outreach or social content.
- Pick Synthesia if your videos need to look uniform across dozens of training modules.

HeyGen vs Synthesia pricing: what you really pay per minute
Both tools list $29 a month for the entry plan, which makes them look identical. They aren't.
HeyGen Creator ($29/mo) gives 600 credits. Premium avatar models use about 20 credits per minute, so that's roughly 30 minutes of top-quality video, about $1 per minute. Older avatar models use about 3 credits per minute, which stretches the same plan to around 200 minutes. Check current rates on the official HeyGen pricing page, because credit costs shift with each new model.
Synthesia Starter ($29/mo, $18 annual) gives about 10 minutes of video a month. That works out to roughly $2.90 per minute on monthly billing.
| Plan | Monthly price | Video per month | Approx. cost per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| HeyGen Creator | $29 | ~30 min (premium avatars) | ~$1.00 |
| Synthesia Starter | $29 | ~10 min | ~$2.90 |
| HeyGen Pro | $49 | 1,000 credits, 4K export | ~$1.00 or less |
| Synthesia Creator | $89 | ~30 min | ~$3.00 |
Is HeyGen or Synthesia cheaper? HeyGen is cheaper per minute. Both entry plans cost $29 a month, but HeyGen Creator covers about 30 minutes of premium avatar video while Synthesia Starter covers about 10 minutes.
The real cost trap on both tools is credits and caps, not the sticker price. We break that down in our guide to the hidden costs of AI tools.
Custom avatars: can you clone yourself?
Yes, in both. The difference is how early you get access.
HeyGen lets you build one custom digital twin even on the free plan, so you can see yourself on screen before paying anything. Creating one takes a short recording plus a consent step.
Synthesia offers personal avatars on its paid plans, with more slots on higher tiers. Its avatar process is more controlled, with explicit consent verification, which fits its enterprise positioning.
Whichever you use, only create an avatar of yourself or someone who has clearly agreed to it, and tell your audience when a presenter is AI-generated where they'd expect a real person. HeyGen vs Synthesia for corporate training
For training, Synthesia is the stronger pick, and it's not close for larger teams.
- Slide-based editor: instructional designers build modules the way they build decks.
- Compliance: SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, which procurement teams often require.
- Team workflows: shared workspaces, brand kits, and review steps.
- Adoption: a large share of Fortune 100 companies use it, which makes internal approval easier.
HeyGen can handle training too, and its Business plan ($149/mo plus seats) adds team features and SCORM export. But Synthesia was built for this job from day one.
Languages and translation
HeyGen supports 175+ languages and includes video translation with lip sync on paid plans, which makes it strong for creators localizing content for international audiences.
Synthesia supports 140+ languages with AI dubbing, and its strength is keeping a consistent look across every language version of a training course.
Which is better for multilingual videos?
HeyGen, for most users. It supports more languages and includes lip-synced video translation on paid plans. Synthesia is the safer pick when a large company needs consistent, approved translations across many training modules.
Pros and cons
HeyGen pros: most realistic avatars, cheaper per minute, free digital twin, 175+ languages HeyGen cons: premium avatars burn credits fast, 4K only from Pro, enterprise compliance on higher tiers
Synthesia pros: enterprise-grade compliance, easy slide editor, consistent corporate avatars, strong team features Synthesia cons: tight minute caps on lower plans, less expressive avatars, higher cost per minute

FAQ
Is HeyGen better than Synthesia?
For creators and marketers, yes. HeyGen has more realistic avatars, more languages, and a lower cost per minute. For enterprise training teams, Synthesia is better thanks to its compliance, slide editor, and team workflows.
Is HeyGen worth it at $29 a month?
Yes, if you make regular avatar videos. The Creator plan's 600 credits cover about 30 minutes of premium avatar video, and the plan removes the watermark and adds voice cloning and 175+ languages.
Is Synthesia worth the price?
For companies producing training at scale, yes. For solo creators, the roughly 10-minute monthly cap on Starter makes it expensive per minute compared with HeyGen.
Is Synthesia completely free?
No. Synthesia has a free plan with a few minutes of watermarked video per month, but publishable, watermark-free video needs a paid plan starting at $29 a month.
What is the free limit for HeyGen?
HeyGen's free plan allows 3 videos per month, each up to 1 minute, with a watermark. It includes one custom digital twin so you can test your own avatar.
Is HeyGen AI safe and legit?
Yes. HeyGen is a Los Angeles-based company founded in 2020, formerly called Movio, with tens of thousands of business customers. As with any avatar tool, use it with consent and disclose AI presenters where appropriate.
What are the cons of Synthesia?
The main drawbacks are tight minute caps on lower plans, a higher cost per minute than HeyGen, and avatars that feel more corporate and less expressive.
Is there a free alternative to Synthesia?
HeyGen's free plan is the closest, with 3 short videos a month and a free custom avatar. See our list of AI tools with free plans for more options.
